The history and purpose of MMS International could never be adequately explained without the mention of Reverend Peter Kashung.  In 1990 Reverend Kashung asked a body of believers to establish an organization in the United States to support and coordinate his work towards evangelizing India and the rest of Southeast Asia.  The original organization was the Manipur Missionary Society which adopted the name from the State of Manipur located in Northeastern India

It was Peter’s goal to quickly train evangelists, teachers, and pastors from among the nationals to turn the hearts of the Indian population away from both Hinduism and Animism towards Jesus Christ.  During the early years Reverend Kashung and his wife Moala operated the Manipur Theological College.  While this remote school was effective in rewarding future leaders with seminary degrees, the four year education program seemed too long to accomplish the immediate goal of mass evangelism.  In addition, political unrest between warring tribes and an underground army made daily life at the college very dangerous.

In 1993 Peter moved his family, the students, and staff to the capital city of Imphal for protection.  It was there that he realized a more ambitious and accelerated training program was needed to win the population to Christ.  With the backing of his friends in the United States and the local churches in India, Peter opened the first Leadership Training Center (LTC) in Imphal.  The LTC program would involve training evangelists and pastors within one year’s time, as well as providing continuing education for pastors and churches in the area.

Today Peter Kashung operates Leadership Training Centers in four strategic locations in India.  His students then disburse to plant churches and encourage growth not only within India, but also to the neighboring countries of Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. In addition to the education, the centers also provide many social services to the population which includes medical care, elementary schools, orphanages, income generation, literacy training, and music education.

Because of the international outreach of his ministry, the name of our organization was changed to MMS International in 2006.  We continue to be the major fund-raising organization to support the ministry of Peter Kashung.  This organization, along with many of our partners, has allowed Peter Kashung’s ministry to become the largest Christian missionary outreach program in northeastern India.
